Last.fm Presents the Top 40 Artists of 2009(UPDATED!) Just like last year, Last.fm (formerly know as AudioScrobbler) presents the hottest artists of 2009, based on user scrobbles. This year, 40 bands and musicians are on the list, instead of only ten in 2008. A new part of the charts is revealed every wednesday of December; as of now, number 40 to 11 have been announced. Visit the Best of 2009 page on December 16 to have a look at the top ten of hottest music. Artists on the list are those who released an album between October 1, 2008 and November 16, 2009, excluding live albums, greatest hits, EPs and singles.

As you can see, the list is dominated by indie, pop and rock, but you can have a look at the 1000 bests, classified by genre: alternative rock, Britpop, electronic, emo, experimental, folk, hardcore punk, mathcore, melodic hardcore, metalcore, pop punk, post-hardcore, punk rock and ska.

A special section has been dedicated to late Michael Jackson, deceased June 25, this year. "This year, 69% of Michael Jackson tracks were scrobbled after his death. Overall, scrobbles from ‘09 account for over half of all the MJ tracks ever scrobbled" says Last.fm, founded in 2002. The graph below demonstrates the peak of songs played just after the King of Pop's death.
